Ingredients

Dough

  • 1 packet Active dry yeast
  • 1 cup Warm milk Dairy or non-dairy
  • 1/2 cup Granulated sugar Can substitute with honey
  • 1/4 cup Unsalted butter Can substitute with coconut oil
  • 1 large Egg Can use a flax egg for vegan
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract Almond extract can be used
  • 2 tablespoons Cocoa powder Use Dutch-process for a richer flavor
  • 1 tablespoon Red food coloring Optional for a chocolate twist
  • 4 cups All-purpose flour Whole wheat can be substituted
  • 1 teaspoon Salt Can use sea salt

Cinnamon Filling

  • 1/2 cup Brown sugar Coconut sugar can be a substitute
  • 2 tablespoons Ground cinnamon Add nutmeg for more warmth
  • 1/4 cup Unsalted butter Softened; can use margarine

Cream Cheese Frosting

  • 8 ounces Cream cheese Vegan cream cheese for plant-based
  • 1/4 cup Unsalted butter Substitute with non-dairy spread
  • 2 cups Powdered sugar Sugar-free blend can be used
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract Experiment with other extracts
  • 2 tablespoons Milk Almond milk or oat milk for dairy-free

Instructions

Making the Rolls

  • Combine warm milk, sugar, and yeast in a small bowl. Let sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  • Mix melted butter, egg, vanilla extract, cocoa powder, and red food coloring in a large bowl. Add the activated yeast mixture and stir well.
  • Add all-purpose flour and salt gradually, mixing until a soft, slightly sticky dough forms.
  • Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  • Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with cloth, and let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour.
  • Blend brown sugar, ground cinnamon, and softened butter until creamy.
  • Punch down the risen dough, roll it out into a rectangle about 1/4 inch thick.
  • Spread the cinnamon filling over the rolled-out dough evenly.
  • Roll the dough tightly from one long edge into a log.
  • Cut the log into 12 equal pieces and place in a greased baking dish.
  • Cover the rolls and let rise for another 30 minutes.
  • Preheat your oven to 350°F.
  • Bake the rolls for 25-30 minutes or until lightly golden on top.
  • Beat together softened cream cheese, unsalted butter, powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and milk until smooth.
  • Cool the rolls for a few minutes before spreading cream cheese frosting over the top.
  • Serve warm for the ultimate treat!

Optional: Drizzle extra cream cheese frosting on individual rolls for added indulgence.
